History of Institute for Herbal Research, Dr. Josif Pancic

Jovan Tucakov was a well known Serbian academic and pharmacognist. He has written a number of books, monographies and scientific works, which have one common theme-herbs and their use in various treatment. On his initiative on May 25th, 1948 Serbian Government established today's Institute for Herbal Reseach "Dr Josif Pancic", originally called Institute for Herbal Analysis. This is the only institution in Serbia dealing with research, manufacture and processing of herbs and herbal products. The Institute is comprised of experts in the pharmacy, agronomy, chemistry, biology and herbs. The name derived from a valuable blend of knowledge, heritage and quality in the herbs research industry.

A high quality of natural products and long tradition of more than 60 years stand behind its motto: "Science and nature in the service of Your Health". This Institute is named after Josif Pancic, who was Serbian scientist and collector, one of the most educated people at that time. During his life, he collected different samples of plants, fish, insects, birds and minerals, not only for collection, but for detailed research. He determined around 2500 plant species, and some of them together with some animal species and one whole family of plants are named after him. Perhaps some of his greatest and most important discovery is Picea omorika, discovered in some parts of Serbia and Bosnia, and which is today known as Serbian Spruce. He has written 42 scientific works, from which Flora of the Principality Of Serbia (Flora Knezevine Srbije) together with Supplement of Flora of the Principality of Serbia (Dodatak flore Srbije) represent his capital work. Pancic is considered to be a pioneer in scientific research of plant and animal life. The greatness of his work is outlined by the era in which he lived, the science he dealt with and the results he achieved under the conditions in which he lived. Josif Pancic died in 1888 and one hundred years later, the Serbian mountaineers have carried his remains to the highest peak of mountain Kopaonik- Suvo Rudiste (today called Pancic's Peak), which was his "beloved mountain".
